Small Business Saturday + Our Top 10 Fave Small Businesses

Small Business Saturday (Nov. 24) took off less than a decade ago as part of a dedicated effort for small businesses to take advantage of the holiday season. Small businesses, like ourselves, can't compete with big retailers and we are often forgotten about.

Why worry about small business? Consider this:

  • Small businesses aren’t in the minority. As of December 2015, there were 1.14 million small businesses in Canada
  • Local money stays local. Every Canadian dollar spent reportedly results in $7 of local economic activity.
  • They create jobs. In 2006, small businesses' contribution to the private employment was 182,600 jobs.

So while big-time retail tends to win throughout the holiday season, statistics show that Small Business Saturday really matters for those smaller scale operations.

Here are some ways you can contribute on November 24:

  • Buy your morning brew at a local  or independent coffee shop instead of a chain
  • Grab a bite to eat at the mom 'n' pop diner
  • Start your holiday shopping at a craft market

If you can't give up those stellar BFCM deals (we won't judge, promise), promote a small business on social media or by word of mouth!

If you follow us on Instagram, you may have noticed that we have been promoting small businesses since the beginning of November. Here is our list of our favorites (in no particular order):
